| Plot: | The hero of this story is a business-like person always on the look-out for a promising "spec". In this he is encouraged by a female relative, and it is while George and his friends are keenly interested in the "dual-purpose" hen that real adventures start. Indeed, George gets into touch with more than one sinister character, as does Corporal Wilkes, whose mysterious disappearance causes trouble of several kinds.
Finally, George and his partners become suspicious of the "dual-purpose" hens and their vendor. Their investigations lead to stranger discoveries than the sad one that George has been "done". They find out who is responsible for a robbery, they learn the secret of a disused mine, and they upset the plans of Mr. Coe, the real villain of the piece. Indeed, they cover themselves with glory in a small way, but George's great "spec" leads nowhere. The "dual-purpose" hens are bad layers! |
